Hole in the septum between the atria (PFO)

There are several kinds of holes between the atria, which can be closed by means of a catheter via the groin.

A hole in the septum between the atria (PFO) stems from the foetal stage where it was necessary for the blood to be able to flow from the right to the left side of the heart. In most cases, the hole closes itself, but an opening remains in about 25% of cases. Theoretically, there is a minor risk that small blood clots may flow with the blood to the left side of the heart, where they may cause a blood clot or a temporary blood clot.

In regard to patients who have had a blood clot in the brain and have PFO as the only risk factor, closing the hole to prevent further blood clots is in some cases recommendable. PFO can be closed by means of a device via a vessel from the groin. The device resembles a kind of double umbrella covered with a fabric-like material.
