Echocardiography

What is echocardiography?

Echocardiography is an ultrasound examination of the heart. Using ultrasound, it is possible to produce an image of the structure of the heart (ventricles, atria and valves), calculate the size of the heart and measure the pumping capacity.

What is echocardiography used for?

Echocardiography is used for:

  • determining the causes of heart murmur
  • measuring the pumping capacity of the heart (following a blood clot in the heart or before surgery etc.)
  • monitoring heart patients (i.e. patients with cardiac muscle insufficiency, congenital heart diseases or valvular heart diseases)

How is echocardiography performed?

The scan is performed by a specialist in cardiology, who places a transducer, i.e. an ultrasound head, on the middle of your chest. By moving the transducer towards different parts of the heart, the specialist creates a detailed image of the state of your heart. The examination lasts approx. ½ hour and you do not have to fast. There is no discomfort in connection with the examination.
