Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery

![]()
Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery is also called bypass Surgery.
What is bypass surgery?
In bypass surgery, a bypass is created around narrowed areas in the coronaries.
How is the treatment performed?
The bypass is created by means of one or more additional vessels (grafts). The additional vessel is taken from the bone, where it can be spared without adverse effects. In those cases where it is not possible to use a vessel from the bone, an artery from the arm is used instead. Moreover, an artery known as mammaria (LIMA), which is found on the inside of the thoractic cage, is almost always used as well.
In regard to ordinary bypass surgery, the mortality rate is less than 1%. After a successfully completed operation, the risk of a fatal blood clot has been reduced to a tenth of the risk before the operation. More than 95% of all patients immediately feel better and almost everyone experiences a reduced dependency on medication and fewer pain attacks.
