Atrial fibrillation surgery

How is atrial fibrillation surgery performed?
In atrial fibrillation surgery, a maze is created in both atria. The result is that the heart rate is normalised, i.e. becomes regular. Most patients become free from medication after surgery and no longer require regular controls.
Facts about the method
This method for treatment of chronic atrial fibrillation was developed in the USA in the middle of the 1980s. The method is known as “MAZE” due to the maze created in both atria in surgery. Many of the first patients who underwent this kind of surgery still – after 15 years – have normal rate. Previous results have shown that the operation has been successful in 85-95% of all cases. The mortality risk in connection with the operation is approx. 1%.
