Angioplasty (PCI)

What is angioplasty?

Sedimentation in the coronary obstructs the blood circulation causing chest pain and risk of blood clots in the heart. Angioplasty is an efficient treatment of the attacks (angina pectoris), although it does not remove the arteriosclerosis.

How is the treatment performed?

In principle, angioplasty in the heart is simple. Via the groin, a catheter is passed into the narrowed vessels. At the end of the catheter is a small inflatable balloon that, when inflated, opens up the vessel so that the blood may again flow freely. In most cases, small tubular meshes (stents) are inserted to keep the coronaries open after the angioplasty has been completed.
